Abstract

This studies have investigated changes with aging of neurons containing neuropeptide Y (NPY) of the caudate and putamen (CP) nucleus in the spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). Changes of NPY immunoreactive (NPY ir) cell bodies and processes with aging in the CP of aged SHR and aged WKY rats were demonstrated by immunohisochemistry With in the CP, NPY it cell bodies and fgber density were observed in the 3 months WKY and 3 months SHR. In the 18 month-old group, age-related decreases were showed in WKY and SHR, but remarkable in 22 month-old SHR. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that aging-hypertension-NPY have a close relationship and NPY is an important contributor to the maintenance of essential hypertension.
